BtVS: Go Fish

in Go Fish, the last fillersode before the big 2 part season finale, the Sunnydale High Swim Team's best swimmers are shedding their skin and turning into monsters.
once again these monsters are used as metaphors for a very real problem facing school sports, in fact sports in general. the use of steroids. as a secondary theme this episode focuses on preferential treatment of jocks by school faculties.

it's a common enough problem in many schools. whether it's football, baseball, basketball, or (in this case) the swim team, some schools allow athletes to slide on their academics as long as they are having a winning season. in one scene Snyder practically orders Willow (still subbing for Ms. Calendar) to change a students grade so he'll be able to participate in the state finals.

guest starring in this episode are two veteran character actors, Conchata Ferrell, (Erin Brockovitch, Mystic Pizza and numerous TV appearances), and Charles Cypher (Major League, Escape From New York, and numerous TV appearances), both of whom has had successful careers in movies and television since the 1970s. it's rare to see two such well known character actors on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but their casting in these roles was perfect.

and in his acting debut, the star of Fox's hit series Prison Break, Wentworth Miller. as Gage Petronzi he gets to peal off his skin, eat the school nurse, and swim out into the ocean never to be seen again. from these humble beginnings Wentworth has gone on to starring in his own show. pretty impressive for such a short career.

Cordy developes a new appreciation for Xander when he joins the swim team to spy on his teammates and shows up in a speedo. after Xander is exposed to the genetically mutating steroids in the steam room she's more concerned about having to date a fish than Xander's well being.

Giles Report: safe as houses

Jonathan Watch: he's dunked in a bucket of ice water by one of the fishboys, then shows up later to be interrogated by Willow (he confesses to peeing in the pool, eewww).
